About the Program:

In Our Own Voice: Living with Mental Illness is a recovery education presentation given by trained consumer presenters for other consumers, family members, friends, professionals, and lay audiences.

A brief, yet comprehensive interactive presentation about mental illness - including video, personal testimony, and discussion - enriches the audience's understanding of how people with these serious disorders cope with the reality of their illnesses while recovery and reclaiming productive lives.

In Our Own Voice: Living with Mental Illness is a practical tool to educate and increase asareness about the true nature of brain disorders, commonly known as mental illness. The presentation covers issues frequently faced by those dealing with severe mental illness:

This Program is Ideal for:

•   Consumers - share, learn, and find hope for living successfully with your illness.

•   Family members - discover the possibility of recovery for your loved one

•   Law enforcement officials - increase awareness of and sensitivity to behaviors triggered by mental illness

•   Faith communities - increase responsiveness to people with mental illness who may first turn to their spiritural community for guidance

Yes I'm Interested, What Do I Do Next?

NAMI will help you schedule an In Our Own Voice: Living with Mental Illness presentation. A NAMI coordinator will meet with you to discuss your needs and to arrange a presentation at a time and location convienent for your group. You provide the audience and NAMI will provide the trained presenter.

Audience size may range from 10 to 20 for consumer groups, and up to 50 for all other audiences. Ideally, the program runs from 60 to 90 minutes to allow for ample discussion time. However, the length of the presentation can be adapted for certain audiences.

All participants receive a take-home folder that includes fact sheets pn topics covered in the presentation and additional NAMI resource materials.

Hear from people who have struggled themselves with disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, and other severe mental illnesses. They invite you into discussion as they share their personal experiences.
